Why Nexpill exists

Nexpill was written by a caregiver, for caregivers. It grew out of looking after a family member through a serious illness, where keeping ahead of pain meant giving medication on a strict schedule — and where tired people doing time arithmetic in the middle of the night, with nothing to remind them, sometimes got it wrong. Then came a taper from one medication to another, on a schedule that changed by the day.

So Nexpill does one job carefully, and it will always be free and open source: no price, no premium tier, no ads. Nobody caring for someone should have to pay for a tool that keeps a dose from being late.

The one thing you need to know, at a glance

Each medication says where it stands right now — due in 8 minutes, overdue by 25, can be given again at 8:19 — with what needs doing first at the top, and a button to log the dose.

Every kind of schedule

Every few hours (odd intervals like 4 h 45 min too), at set times of day, as needed with a minimum gap, or a taper whose interval changes by date.

Reminders that arrive on time

Exact alarms held by the phone, so they come on the minute — with no signal, in airplane mode, after a restart. Mark the dose given or snooze it straight from the notification.

An alarm when it matters

For the doses that can't be missed, a reminder can ring like an alarm clock, repeating until someone deals with it.

No time arithmetic

Nexpill works out when the next dose can be given, counting across midnight and clock changes, and asks before you log one early.

A record you can trust

Fix a mistaken time with a correction that keeps the original, note who gave each dose, and save the history as a spreadsheet or a summary for the doctor.

More than one person

Caring for a parent and a child? Each gets their own medications and reminders; switch between them with a tap.

Your records stay on your phone

The question “what do they do with my data?” has a boring answer: nothing, because it never reaches us.

No internet permission

Nexpill is built without permission to use the internet, so Android itself stops it from sending anything anywhere. Check the permission list yourself.

No account, no server

Everything you log lives in a database on your phone. It only goes somewhere else if you move it yourself, as a backup file or an export.

Nothing watching

No analytics, advertising or tracking in the app, and it's excluded from Android's cloud backup. Delete your data in Settings and it's gone.

The only permissions Nexpill asks for: notifications, for reminders; exact alarms, so they arrive on the minute; restarting reminders after your phone reboots; and vibration. Nexpill tracks timing — it doesn't give medical advice.

Installing

Tap Download APK on your phone. Chrome warns that the file might be harmful — it says that about every app from outside the Play Store. Tap Download anyway.
Open the download. At Do you want to install this app?, tap Install. The first time, your phone may ask you to allow Chrome to install unknown apps before that.
If you see App blocked to protect your device, tap More details, then Install anyway. That's Play Protect being cautious about an app it hasn't seen before; Nexpill is new.
Open Nexpill and allow notifications, so reminders can reach you. Settings has a test reminder to check.

Updates install over the top and keep your records. Uninstalling erases them — use Back up to a file in Settings first. Coming to F-Droid.

Used the old web version of Nexpill? It's been retired; this app replaces it, with reminders the web version couldn't make reliable.
